John's Vacation

            John is waiter in New York City. He has one week off  every August for summer vacation. Last summer he decided to take a trip to California. He didn't want to go by plane. He really wanted to see the United States, so he decided to take a train from New York to California.

            The train left Penn Station in New York City on Monday at 10:30 PM. John tried to sleep that night, but he couldn't because he was too excited. He knew this train trip was fantastic idea. 

            During the long trip, John looked out the window and watched the country go by. Of course, he saw many different things. There were large cities, small towns, and a lot of beautiful countryside. There were farms in Kansas and snow-capped mountains in Colorado. There was the Mojave Desert between Arizona and California.

            For five days, John didn't get off the train. He often took walks through the train and talked with the other passengers. Sometimes he rode between the cars to get some fresh air. He had all his meals in the dining car.

            Finally, at 2:45 PM, on Friday, the train arrived in San Francisco. John was happy to get off the train! He called some of his friends and they got together and ate at an Italian restaurant in North Beach. On Saturday, he went to a museum in Golden Gate Park and had lunch at a restaurant near Ghirardelli Square.

            On Sunday, John took a 9:20 A.M. flight back to New York. He looked out the window of the airplane and imagined the desert,mountains, farms, and cities below him. After a while, he closed his eyes and started to make plans for his next summer vacation.
